There are times when it's necessary to do a little "bridge burning" to make way for new horizons. While it might sound a tad dramatic, it's actually a courageous step that can lead to exciting opportunities and personal growth.

I think we all have burned a few bridges in our lives. Some bigger than others, some very hard to do and some super easy to demolish and let go off.

It’s like letting go of things or situations that no longer serve us, like leaving behind a job that's become a daily grind, or saying goodbye to toxic relationships. It can be a bit scary because it often means stepping out of our comfort zones, but the rewards are worth the bravery it takes.

Our first five years in Spain were spent on the sunny island of Mallorca. But, as fate would have it, we decided to venture onto the mainland, with our hearts set on a cute little village called Frigiliana. We'd visited it a few years earlier and fell in love. There was just one hitch, we had no house there and weren't quite sure how to make it a reality.

At that point, our family was a lively bunch, including three dogs, two cats, our 11 year-old twin boys, and our new born daughter, only three months old. They say, "Don't move to a new town or house when you've just had a baby." Well, I was feeling strong and confident, so why not? Little did we know, that our excitement would crescendo by the end of our move.

Our entire house was in boxes, and we had just one month left on our rental contract, with no new home to move to on the mainland Spain.

Hubby Ole was invited to give a talk in the mountains, and he asked if I wanted to join. To be honest, I wasn't keen, but he believed it was important for some reason that he do this talk for a group of elder gentlemen. So, with some reluctance, I hopped into the car, after all, the drive to the west coast of Mallorca is stunning.

After Ole's talk, one of the men asked if he could return for another one. Ole explained that we were on a major move to the mainland, making it a bit tricky. Meanwhile, I was sitting in the next room, nursing our daughter and eavesdropping on the conversation. The man asked about our destination, and Ole told him he had no real idea, but was dreaming about the tiny village we had fallen in love with. He also described our vulnerable situation, highlighting the fact that we only had a few weeks to find a new place to call our home.

And then it happened - the man said that his friend had a villa in Frigiliana, available for long-term rental! What were the chances? In that tiny village, just outside the charming town of Nerja.

To cut a long story short, we took the plunge and agreed to rent the place without even laying eyes on it. We moved everything in complete darkness, arriving in the middle of the night, navigating a pitch black gravel road. We hadn't seen a single photo of the place, we simply trusted the man's word that it was lovely. My biggest wish was a sea view. After five years living inland on a Mediterranean island, I yearned for a glimpse of the sea. The following morning, this is what I saw.

I couldn't hold back the tears of gratitude. The villa was beyond our wildest dreams, complete with a massive pool for the kids.

Our method of burning that bridge may not be the smartest move in the book, but for us, it was a pure miracle with a little help from above.

Burning bridges isn't about destruction, it's about clearing the way for exciting new adventures. I know it takes some guts to say ‘enough is enough’ and move on from something that's been a part of your life for a while. But it's precisely in those moments of stepping into the unknown that we discover our true strength and potential. Facing fear head on can be incredibly empowering and lead to growth we never thought possible.

I think of it like striking a match – a fresh start. Having faith is like carrying that matchstick, trusting its flame will light our way through the uncertain future. Together, they represent the balance between closure, faith, and hope as we journey through life.

So, if you find yourself at a crossroads, don't be afraid to light a few metaphorical bridges on fire. After all, it might just be the spark you need for a brighter, more fulfilling and joyful journey ahead.
