Why I Wanted to Be a Boy

I have just started watching the tv series ‘Mad Men’, which is set in the early 60s. And wow, we women have come a long way.
From the time I was a little girl, I couldn't help but notice the advantages boys seemed to enjoy in our society. It wasn't that I harboured any resentment or dissatisfaction with being a girl, I just couldn't shake the feeling that the grass was a tad greener on the other side, and still is actually.
As a free playing kid and with the love for climbing trees, I started to realize the difference in treatment between boys and girls. It wasn't that my parents weren't supportive, they never stopped me from doing anything “boyish”. Still, there were those unspoken societal norms that always seemed to favour the boys. They got the cool toys, the superhero capes and most importantly, the unspoken freedom to get a little messy without being labelled a tomboy.
